Libbey pride on display at reunion

TOLEDO, OH (Toledo News Now) -

Libbey High School once stood on Western Avenue in South Toledo but was torn down in 2012.

On Saturday, however, Libbey graduates wanted everyone to know the Libbey legacy lives on.

Alumni came to share memories, renew old acquaintances, do some grilling and dance.

They are proud to be Libbey Cowboys.

"The building is not here but we still want to be part of each other's lives," said Francine Coogler Boyd, organizer of the reunion and picnic.

Libbey was built in 1923.

The last class graduated in 2010.

Declining enrollment forced the closure.

Despite emotional alumni efforts to save it, the building met the wrecking ball in 2012.

Many feel the demolition was like tearing down a part of their lives.

"Sad. Very sad. I was in disbelief when I walked up here because I wasn't here when the actual facility was torn down. To see the vacant space is heartbreaking. Very heartbreaking," said Paula Williams of the Class of '79.

Alumni hope to make the reunion and picnic an annual event.

They're also looking for a location to display memorabilia from the school, such as trophies, medals, newspapers and yearbooks.

"When we were going to Libbey, there was a special bonding with all the people who went here," said Ms. Coogler Boyd.

And as some Libbey alumni have been known to say, there's more to being a Cowboy than just wearing boots.
