PAINESVILLE, OH (WOIO) -

Are you being scammed when you give cash to a person asking for money on the street?

Back in February, Reporter Paul Orlousky exposed a team working together in Painesville. It was the middle of winter, when Orlousky confronted two "panhandling pros."

Well, it's summer now, and Orlousky found the same two men at the same spot, telling the same story.

Phillip and his partner, Charles, regularly worked shoppers at the plaza on Mentor Avenue for cash - successfully.

Four months later, Orlousky found Charles right back at it. But here's the rub - 19 Action News cameras caught Charles as he was leaving his home for his "panhandling job" asking for cash at the plaza. Obviously, he's not homeless, but he carries a sign that reads "Help me not be homeless."

How much do they take in? Enough to pay $550 monthly rent. One of the men bragged, "Why get a job? I made $92 at the plaza today."

A high temperature of 92 degrees tied a record today. The high also made it six 90 degree days in-a-row, four records tied or broken. Wednesday will start off warm and humid, but be prepared for winds to shift to northerly...More >>
