WWII vet receives Purple Heart

CINCINNATI, OH (FOX19) -

U.S. Rep. Steve Chabot presented several medals, including the Purple Heart, to Mr. John Jackson, a World War II veteran on Friday.

Jackson entered the U.S. Army in 1943 and served until 1947. He was initially stationed in Liverpool, England and participated in the D-Day invasion as a truck driver and amphibious vehicle operator, picking up numerous wounded troops during the invasion.

After the invasion, he was assigned to an infantry unit made up of 43 African Americans – K Company, 26th Regiment, 1st Division, also known as the "Bloody One."

He was wounded while in combat and still has a bullet lodged in his leg. After leaving the military in 1947, Mr. Jackson worked for the U.S. Postal Service for 32 years.

At the ceremony, Rep. Chabot presented Mr. Jackson with the following medals:

  • Purple Heart
  • Army Good Conduct Medal
  • World War II American Campaign Medal
  • European-African-Middle Eastern Campaign Medal and Silver Star Attachment
  • World War II Victory Medal
  • Army Occupation Medal and Germany Clasp
  • Combat Infantryman Badge 1st Award
