Imagine going to the pitcher's mound at Comerica Park. It happened to Lee Armstrong Wednesday afternoon.

Detroit Tigers pitcher Justin Verlander was behind the plate. Armstrong threw a perfect pitch to Verlander.

"So it was kind of neat," Armstrong said. "How many people can say Justin Verlander caught their pitch?"

Armstrong retired from the Navy after a 22-year career.

Now, he heads the Lucas County Verterans Service Commission, an agency providing emergency financial assistance and other aid to veterans. He is also president of Honor Flight, a group that regularly flies vets to the World War II Memorial in Washington, DC.

"It's my way of giving back to them and my country for what they did," he said.

That's why Armstrong was nominated in the "Tribute to Heroes" competition, sponsored by Major League Baseball and People Magazine.

He is one of three finalists for the Tigers. If he wins, Armstrong will be honored for service to his country during a pre-game ceremony prior to the MLB All Star Game in New York City.

Each club's winner will be selected by online voting.

"I would love to win, but at the same time would not be upset if the other two finalists represented the Detroit Tigers," Armstrong said.

But he also wants to win for his son Jon, a Marine veteran. Military duty has separated them over the last 20 years, but if he wins, they'll go to the game together.

"And my goal was if I win, that he and I are going to go and spend some time together and do something as two vets, father/son, and enjoy the time together," he said.

To make that happen for them, go to vote for Armstrong here. You can vote as many times as you like up until June 30th. It's a way to thank Lee Armstrong for serving our country.
