Perrysburg cuts minimum fire department staffing

PERRYSBURG, OH (Toledo News Now) -

The City of Perrysburg has temporarily reduced the fire department staff to help manage the department's overtime budget, but they say there's no reason for the public to be concerned.

Firefighters work 24-48, which means one day of work and two days off, with seven people per shift. The minimum staffing at one time has been five firefighters on duty, but now that number will temporarily be reduced to four, and the department will back-staff a crew member.

It's all because of a weekly projected overtime deficit of $13,000.

"I think in emergency situations, more is really better," said Tim Quitter. "I think when it comes to life-saving, I would like to think [the city] would spare no expense."

City officials explained the fire crews are still maintaining the same standards as they have before, and they will still get to emergencies as quickly and provide the same service. They also said there will be no permanent staffing cuts, and they will always bring in more firefighters in the event of extreme circumstances.
