Perrysburg cuts minimum fire department staffing

PERRYSBURG, OH (Toledo News Now) -

TheCity of Perrysburg has temporarily reduced the fire department staff to helpmanage the department's overtime budget, but they say there's no reason for thepublic to be concerned.

Firefighterswork 24-48, which means one day of work and two days off, with seven people pershift. The minimum staffing at one time has been five firefighters on duty, butnow that number will temporarily be reduced to four, and the department willback-staff a crew member.

It'sall because of a weekly projected overtime deficit of $13,000.

"Ithink in emergency situations, more is really better," said Tim Quitter. "Ithink when it comes to life-saving, I would like to think [the city] wouldspare no expense."

Cityofficials explained the fire crews are still maintaining the same standards asthey have before, and they will still get to emergencies as quickly and providethe same service. They also said there will be no permanent staffing cuts, andthey will always bring in more firefighters in the event of extremecircumstances.
