HazMat drill for Tiffin first responders

TIFFIN, OH (Toledo News Now) -

First responders were put to the test for a hazardous material spill in Tiffin Wednesday.

The training scenario set up was a chemical spill at Heidelberg University with multiple injuries. Tiffin fire fighters and EMS personnel responded.

"We're simulating having to do mass casualty triage, transporting patients to the hospital, and doing decontamination with them at the facility once they get there," explained Mike Homan, of Tiffin Fire and Rescue.

The students were taken to Mercy Tiffin Hospital for decontamination and treatment. All the agencies involved worked together, because staying on the same page is key during a mass injury event.

"It helps you prepare for when it really does happen," said Jeffrey Rhodes, of Heidelberg Security. "You hope it doesn't, but when it does, you at least have a better idea of how you're going to, at least know who you're going to call when you need help and things like that."

Crews were debriefed after the drill.

While it was just a drill, the training provided a very real experience for those involved.

"Unfortunately, things do happen," Homan said. "It can be something as simple as a spill in a chemical lab to a mass shooter scenario. That is a possibility that we also train for, and it's something we hope never happens."
