Liberty Center wants drivers to slow down

LIBERTY CENTER, OH (Toledo News Now) -

Leaders in Liberty Center are looking into the possibility of reducing the speed limit along certain portions of State Route 109, in an effort to increase safety.

Residents in the area say there's limited visibility at a curve in the road, and they think drivers take the curve too fast. It's just north of the main downtown area in Liberty Center, where the speed limit jumps from 25 to 35 miles per hour.

"We've had a couple of accidents there already, so we're concerned with safety," said Mayor Max Fetterman.

So leaders are looking into the possibility of expanding the 25 mile-per-hour speed limit, at least to the curve. Fetterman says it's especially important now, when more people use the road since 24 opened. That extra traffic can pose a threat to residents.

"A lot of children are on their bikes or walking to the park, which is just west of the intersection," said resident Carol Carpenter.

Liberty Center leaders say they will work with ODOT to figure out the next steps and what needs to happen to bring about safe change.
