School is out and swimming season has begun. But that can mean danger if your children aren't prepared.

Eight local YMCA locations began a "Splash" program. For 15 years, they've been providing free water safety courses for children aged 6 months to 12 years old.

The Centers for Disease Control say drowning is the leading cause of injury death for children 1-4 years old.

"We want them to learn the basics," said Melanie Grohowski, executive director and aquatics director of the Eastern Community YMCA. "They are going to learn those basic swimming skills, basic safety skills."

Sasia King brought her children Jacob, Solomon and Nyla to the YMCA for Splash. They were also there two years ago.

"I thought it was important to get them in a session again," King said. "It's important for the kids to learn how to swim so that when they are around any body of water, as a parent, you are comfortable. If you take your eye off them for just a second, you know that they will be okay."

The kids had fun during the program and learned something.

"When we're around water, it's just safer for us to know what we're doing and not to be in danger or anything," said Jacob King.

Parents don't have to be members of the YMCA to enroll their children in Splash. There are still a few openings in the program, so call a local branch to sign up.
