Monday honors workers who work keeping neighborhoods clean - News, Weather, Sports, Toledo, OH

Monday is National Garbage Man Day

(FOX19) -

It's dirty. It's difficult. It's even dangerous. Driving a 25-ton truck and collecting waste and recycling is not a job for everyone.

Drivers rise in the dark morning hours. They endure intense heat in the summer and bitter cold in the winter. They do more before 7 a.m., than the average person can imagine.

Monday is National Garbage Man Day. Of Rumpke's nearly 3,000 employees, over 1,000 serve as drivers of various types. Seven percent of drivers have been with Rumpke for more than 20 years and 15 percent have been here for more than 10 years.

Recycling and residential drivers exert serious physical effort, lifting and dumping residential cans or bins at each stop. Recycling drivers average about 500 stops per day while residential trash haulers can make anywhere from 400-750 stops per day. Rumpke drivers average a workload of 55 hours each week.

This is the first year for the National Garbage Man Day celebration. The new holiday, conceived by Florida-based garbage company encourages  raised awareness of men and women in the sanitation industry and the work they do for their communities.

Hallmark is joining the National Solid Wastes Management Association in celebrating the day. They are even test marketing cards.
