Welcome to the force, Speedy!

SYLVANIA TOWNSHIP, OH (Toledo News Now) -

The Sylvania Township Police Department has a new set of eyes to protect the public. The new officer also has an excellent sense of smell, and great hearing.

Did we mention he's the new K9?

Officer Patrick Charest has been with the department for four years, but his new partner Speedy just started Friday.

"I love to go out there and interact with the public, locate narcotics, locate bad guys," Officer Charest said. "The ability to have him, and to have that one-up, extra edge is fantastic. I mean, how cool is it you get to ride around with your buddy all day?"

Speedy's specialty is drug and human tracking. He can also do criminal apprehension. All his skills will benefit Sylvania Township and surrounding communities.

"He's going to be a fantastic tool," Charest said. "Our number one job, obviously, is to keep the community safe…With his nose, it will give us the ability to take more drugs off the street."

Speedy is a 1-year-old Belgian Malinois from the Czech Republic. Officer Charest went through vigorous and detailed training with Speed for six weeks in Columbus. But before they could work together, the two had to pick each other.

"They showed us two different dogs," Charest said. "They let me go out, walk around with him, and I hate to say it this way, but the moment I saw him, I knew he was going to be the right dog."
