Local Headstarts to close, cut back due to sequester cuts

(Toledo News Now) -

Local Headstart organizations are facing money troubles, and a couple will be closing.

Headstart is facing a 5.2 percent cut in federal funding as a direct result of the sequester, which will affect more than 1,000 local children.

Bellevue and Bradner Headstart locations will be closing, and the locations in Perrysburg and Rossford will be combined. Many others will have to cut back on their services.

"It's gonna throw a wrench in a lot of people's lives," said Crystal Walker.

She's counted on WSOS Headstart services while raising all six of her children. She now sits on the state board of directors.

"I was very disappointed," Walker said. "Any funding you take away from children is detrimental to the children."

Walker says her own life changed when she was able to finish school, all because child care wasn't an issue.

"It has helped me to achieve many, many goals," she said.

And she isn't the only one.

"This school means a lot to my family," said Brittney Castillo. "They've helped my son talk. He didn't know how to talk, now he won't stop talking.
