Community leaders raise awareness on elder abuse

TOLEDO, OH (Toledo News Now) -

Community leaders and agencies in Lucas County gathered to raise awareness about elder abuse for World Elder Abuse Awareness Day.

In honor of the event, the coalition of organizations protecting elders, hosted a press conference as a way to educate the public.

Lucas County Prosecutor Julia Bates, along with several other experts, spoke to the crowd about the importance of taking care of the elderly.

Several issues were discussed, including physical abuse, neglect and the increase in financial exploitation.

COPE co-chair Cheryl Conley says today is a day to raise awareness and inform the public of the programs and help available for those who need it.

"If you have a neighbor or a family member who you suspect there's a problem, either financially or neglect, or even neglecting themselves, and that they need help, or certainly physical abuse, you could call the Adult Protective Services, and Job and Family Services" said Conley.

Conley says they've seen an increase in financial exploitation of the elderly since the downturn of the economy.

This marks the 8th year elder abuse has been recognized.
