Ravine pool demolition starts

TOLEDO, OH (Toledo News Now) -

The mayor's office says the work is being done to eliminate a nuisance and public safety hazard, by tearing down the former Ravine Pool in East Toledo.

Councilman Mike Craig says what upsets him the most about demolition work starting this week, is he found out about it from a friend on Facebook. "There was no reason why it needed to be torn down right now. Communication is key to running a city."

Craig says considering the mayor recently announced the city closed out the 2012 budget with a $5 million surplus, he believes money could have been set aside to renovate the pool. "They spent almost $300,000 last year to keep Roosevelt Pool going, $300,000 would have had this pool going."

Antione Houston lives near Ravine Park, and he's not happy to see demo crews working there. "I'm a little upset about the pool because the kids they don't have a whole lot to do. We got the park but pretty much all of the pools in Toledo they're closing down."Antione hopes the city will find a new recreational use for the land. "Maybe like a skateboard park, that seems like a thing to do."

East Toledo neighbor William Dunwoody shares those concerns. "What happens next? Instead of a green area, I'd like to see them put in a ball diamond for the kids, basketball, something like that for the kids to do."

Currently the city has no plans for the former pool space. On June 24, the city will open 6 pools for the summer: Navarre, Roosevelt, Jamie Farr, Pickford, Wilson and Willys Park.
