OSP makes big drug bust on I-80

BRYAN, OH (Toledo News Now) -

One man from California is currently in the Corrections Center of Northwest Ohio after Ohio State Highway Patrol found a kilo of cocaine worth around $84,000 in the man's car.

OSP arrested Genaro Jerry Rodriguez, 41, of Cressey, CA who was charged with possession and trafficking in cocaine. Both offences are first-degree felonies. In addition, Rodriguez was charged with possession of criminal tools, a fifth-degree felony. If convicted, Rodriguez could face up to 21 years in prison and up to a $42,500 fine.

Troopers stopped a 1998 Honda Civic with state of Washington registration for a following too close violation. This happened on I-80, near milepost 8 just before 2:00pm in the afternoon on June 11.

Probable cause led troopers to release a drug-sniffing canine to search the vehicle. The canine led troopers to a large speaker with an electronic compartment containing a kilo of cocaine in the vehicle's trunk.
