OTTAWA COUNTY, OH (Toledo News Now) -

Ottawa County's new approach to dinner behind bars will make both inmates and taxpayers happy.

In the past, inmates at the Ottawa County Detention Facility received only one hot meal a day. Now, they will receive three hot meals a day, thanks to the Ottawa County Sheriff's Office teaming up with Chefsbest Catering of Port Clinton.

Chefsbest has been a staple in the community for decades.

"What's really nice, and what means a lot to us, is Chefsbest is a local provider," said Sheriff Stephen Levorchick. "They're a local, family-owned business."

What's nice for county residents is the partnership is saving the county money.

"We were paying $2.44 per meal, per inmate, and now with Chefsbest we pay $1.95 per meal," Levorchick said.

The sheriff expects the partnership to save the county up to $50,000 within the first year of the contract.

Chefsbest Owner John Couture also sees the benefit of the new deal.

"It's going to help a lot," Couture said. "I just hired a new lady Monday, and it will keep everybody going year-round, and when it slows down, their hours will equal out to 40."

The inmates, of course, appreciate their new meal plan. They wrote Couture a letter expressing how much they like the food.

"You got turkey, cheese, you know, thicker bread, thicker slices," said inmate Joshua Jones. "It's more fulfilling."

The 3-year contract began the beginning of June.
