Police looking to curb thieves targeting trash

ADRIAN, MI (Toledo News Now) -

Residents may want to think twice before taking your bin out to the street curb. Adrian Police are investigating several complaints of people digging through trash looking for any personal information for purposes of identity theft. It's happening both at homes and local businesses.

Adrian Police say they've gotten complaints of people rummaging around trash looking for documents.

In some cases, people were even spotted taking the whole bag.

Residents said they've seen this happening but many had no idea their personal identities were being targeted.

"It's one thing you wouldn't really expect. I mean you see a lot of people now a days with the economy that do scrapping so that's automatically what I think it is, but now that I'm hearing that, it's nerve-wracking actually" says local resident Anthony Maliszewski.

"Anything containing personal information, dates of birth, account numbers can be used to commit identity theft, so when you throw those things away make sure you shred them" says Chief of Adrian Police Vince Emrick.

Another tip in addition to shredding documents, you can also wait to bring your trash out until right before collection time.
