Counterfeit postal money orders have been floating around the area lately. Scammers are luring people in by saying consumers can make thousands by being a secret shopper.

Dick Eppstein from the Better Business Bureau says the counterfeit money orders look very similar to real ones, but there is a surefire way to tell if it's a scam.

A Swanton woman received an offer to be a secret shopper at Walmart. She was sent a money order and told to cash it, keep $150 for herself, and send the rest to a Chicago shopper.

The directions called for her to send $800 to the crooks by Western Union. After that, the money order would bounce and she would owe the money.

Eppstein says to always watch out for checks sent to you. If they tell you to send any money back to them, it is definitely a scam, not to mention a violation of federal law.
