Swimming season has begun, and with it, more dangers for children. Tragedy was narrowly avoided Monday afternoon in Springfield Township, when a 2-year-old girl was rescued from a pool just in time.

Firefighters responded to a 911 call, but when they got there, the scene on Holloway Road had already played out.

Brenda McGovern was watching her grandson and her granddaughter's boyfriend's two children. One of those was 2-year-old Bella Brandon.

"I asked the boys were Bella was, and they said, ‘in the pool,'" McGovern explained. "And I said, ‘Oh my God, no!'"

She said the children were only supposed to be playing in a small kiddie pool, but Bella ended up at the bottom of the big pool. At that moment, McGovern's adult grandson Dustin Bomer arrived.

"He just screamed and turned away, and I said, ‘Get her no matter what,'" McGovern said.

Bomer pulled Bella out just in time. She did not have to be resuscitated, but she was taken to ProMedica Toledo to get checked out.

McGovern says the little girl was like a granddaughter to her.

"I feel pretty lucky," she said. "If nothing else ever goes right for me, God's done His job, and I'll be grateful."

McGovern admitted the ladder was left too close to the pool. If she had moved it further away, Bella would not have fallen in.
