New procedure treats aneurysms at UTMC

TOLEDO, OH (Toledo News Now) -

Abrand new procedure at the University of Toledo Medical Center could helpdozens of people in the area.

Theprocedure is called flow diversion, and it's used to treat brain aneurysms.

"It'sa very exciting time for us, because traditionally these aneurysms have beenvery difficult to treat," said Dr. Syed Zaidi, assistant professor ofNeurology. "It seems to be working, as far as we can tell."

Acoil stent is placed in the patient's brain to divert blood-flow away from theaneurysm, allowing it to heal.

PatriciaThomas was the first patient to undergo the procedure. She says it was worth itwhen she got good news from her doctor.

"Hecalled me and said the aneurysm is gone," Thomas said. "That was exciting. Wewere all happy to hear that."

Ananeurysm is a bulge in a blood vessel that can leak or rupture. They can causesevere headaches, loss of vision, and sometimes even death. Thomas' surgerywent so well, doctors at UTMC have already performed five others, and they'rehoping to do many more.

"Iwould absolutely tell those who need to have something done, have it done withno trepidation," said Thomas.
