Local neighborhood concerned about tree cutting

TOLEDO, OH (Toledo News Now) -

Neighbors along California Boulevard in West Toledo are upset because trees, which were planted a few years ago to complete a road reconstruction project, have been cut down.

This is similar to promises being made by the city to replace trees along Cherrylawn Drive and Collingwood Boulevard for road projects. Neighbors along California say a few years back the city kept that promise to them, until recently when city crews cruised down their street.

"They drove down the street just cutting, they didn't come up to anybody, the truck pulls up and they were cutting away," says Joe Cicarella.

"I'm not really pleased. We had this gorgeous remodeling project on the street and they had replanted trees. They were just starting to grow" says Joyce Yarnell.

Those neighbors are even more upset because they say they were told the trees were taken down to make it easier to cut the grass along the boulevard.

"That's what they told us. They cut them down because they hired somebody to cut that grass. It was hard for them to get around the trees," says Cicarella. "They were perfectly good trees and they said they had no plans of replanting them. It just seems like an utter waste of taxpayer money," says Yarnell.

To make matters worse for Joe Cicarella, he says he's been asking the city to cut down a large tree in front of his house which is rotting, and he's worried it's an accident waiting to happen.

"We were told many times there's green leaves on this tree they won't touch it."

On Monday, council held a committee hearing to review when the city cuts down trees for road projects, but neighbors along California say people in other neighborhoods have reason to be skeptical of any promises being made to them.
