City Council reviews Lucas County jail space agreement

TOLEDO, OH (Toledo News Now) -

A Toledo City Councilman is raising concerns about taxpayer money going to waste, for bed space reserved by the city at the Lucas County Jail.

The city pays to reserve 35 beds per night at the jail, for people who have been accused of a crime and have a history of failing to appear in court.

Toledo City Councilmen Mike Collins says over the past three years on average the city has 10 beds per night empty at the jail. This amounts to more than $1 million being wasted over the past three years.

Collins says systematic changes need to be reviewed to make sure that jail space is being utilized. "That's the reason why the bed space was there, to take individuals who fail to appear and provide lodging for them so they'll be there in the morning. We're not fulfilling that responsibility to the system in my opinion, and it's costing the taxpayers."

A council committee hearing on the issue was held on Monday, as a proposal calls for renewing that jail space agreement with the county for the next three years.
