TOLEDO, OH (Toledo News Now) -

A Toledo native is in the biggest fight of her life. Now, family members and friends are doing what they can to help ease the financial burden for her and her family.

Nikki Mitchell is a 31-year-old mother, art teacher, and wife of a soldier. After being diagnosed with a rare form of lung cancer in November, Nikki put on her boxing gloves to fight for her life.

When the diagnosis of stage four lung cancer came, Nikki says the first thing she thought of was her husband Shaun and her 4-year-old daughter Mia.

"Between her and my husband, I knew I was gonna give it all that I had to get through this, and to get by for them," Nikki said.

Her husband Shaun says one of the most difficult things is trying to explain the situation to their daughter, and watching the person you love in pain.

"Just to watch her go through the pain, knowing that you really can't do anything about it, it hurts you inside," he said. "You really don't want the person you love going through that."

Two of Nikki's BGSU sisters are hosting a fundraiser Saturday to raise money for the Mitchells.

"She's got the biggest heart, and she makes you want to be a better person," said Kendra Brown.

A fundraiser and poker run is set for noon on Saturday at Traveler's Motorcycle Club on Dorr Street in Toledo. At 4 p.m., they will stop to pray for Nikki.

"You just keep trucking," Nikki said. "That's been our motto through this whole thing. We're just gonna keep trucking and take one day at a time."

Ed. Note: Nikki Mitchell passed away in July of 2013. Our condolences to her family and friends.
