Neighbors of Isaac Hayes' former mansion upset over lack of action

(WMC-TV) - The former home of singer Isaac Hayes burned to the ground last year.  Now, neighbors want something done about the abandoned property.

Neighbors say the burned out house is an eyesore, a safety concern, and it is affecting home sales.

Natalie Joyner wants answers about the property she has neighbored for 17 years.

"It is incredibly frustrating," she said.

The home was owned by Kenneth and Dorris Peters. It burned last May when Cordova was still part of Shelby County.

Shortly after the fire, the county installed a fence around the property to protect it while fire crews investigated arson as a possible cause. But in July, when Cordova was annexed, the fence came down and unwanted guests made their way onto the property.

"In fact, we've had people, as a matter of fact, Saturday and Monday, stealing stuff. And the washer and dryer, it's just the principle," said Joyner. "We just don't want thieves in the neighborhood."

Lesley Scriven is trying to sell her house on the other side of the burned out property. She says anyone who is interested has expressed concern about the abandoned house next door.

"It's a safety issue. I mean, I got three children out of there yesterday," she explained.

The two women say they have called city inspectors and the mayor's hot line. They even call police when they see someone trespassing, but officials will only say that the property is still under investigation.

The Memphis city inspector and mayor have not yet returned our requests for comment.
