Former SCPA leading candidate for new Marriott hotel - Toledo News Now, News, Weather, Sports, Toledo, OH

Marriott sets its sights on former SCPA building

OVER THE RHINE, OH (FOX19) -

Marriott International announced it's bringing a new European style hotel to the United States, and Cincinnati could be the first to open one of these boutique hotels.

The former School for Creative and Performing Arts building is a leading candidate.

AC Hotels by Marriott was launched in 2011 as a joint venture between Marriott International and Spanish group AC Hotels.

"I think it's a win-win, and if Marriott is doing it, you know this isn't mom and pop. It's going to be a good execution if they do it," said resident Peter Strasser.

So what makes this hotel different from others? Tom Wein is a partner with Remark Hospitality Development, and he says it caters to young business travelers. This 140 room hotel could include a day spa, breakfast buffet, outdoor courtyard, a 750 capacity theater, library and fitness center.

"It's called a lifestyle hotel where you get to actually feel the city, travel in style, and every property has unique characteristics and features," Wein explained.

This $30 million boutique hotel would replace an old school that's been vacant for over two years. Resident Tim Lloyd even has a family connection to this historic building: His dad went to school here.

"It's just interesting to think that my dad was a little boy here, and now I live just up the street," said Lloyd.

Wein says the Marriott's excited to bring their concept to a building that has so much history to the City of Cincinnati.

"What we want to do while maintaining the historic nature of the building, we want to modernize that facility so that it's ready for the next 100 years," said Wein.

However, this isn't a done deal. The developers are still working with the city to work out different issues with zoning and parking, but once that's settled, they hope to have the hotel up and running by the end of 2014.

Developers say if they can't come to an agreement on parking or zoning with the city, they would consider looking at turning the building into an apartment complex.
