El Reno, OK tornado was widest in American history

EL RENO, OKLAHOMA (Toledo News Now) -

The massive tornado that hit El Reno, Oklahoma on Friday has officially been declared the widest in American history.

The twister measured 2.6 miles wide at one point, beating the previous record of 2.5 miles.

The storm packed winds of up to 295 miles per hour. The tornado and subsequent flooding in the Oklahoma City area killed 18 people.

The National Weather Service upgraded the EF-3 tornado to an EF-5 on Tuesday.

The previous record holding storm hit Wilber-Hallam, Nebraska on May 22, 2004.
