Holgate students preparing for Zombie Apocalypse

HENRY COUNTY, OH (Toledo News Now) -

A federally funded grant is giving local students a chance to better serve their community.

Students at Holgate Local Schools are getting hands-on community service opportunities through a grant called "21st Century Community Learning Center."

The program is offered to students both before and after school. Some students visit a local nursing home, teaching the residents about new technology and improving the facility by planting, raking, and laying mulch.

Jill Proudfoot with the Northwest Ohio Educational Service Center says these are the kind of learning opportunities kids will remember for life.

Proudfoot says most people learn better by using their hands and participating in enrichment activities.

The Educational Service Center makes those learning experiences possible, with the $9.5 million raised for the program.

Students are now planning for a ‘Zombie Apocalypse' on October 19. They are gathering supplies to create emergencies kits in case of a natural disaster. Kolgate Schools is the designated disaster relief site for all of Henry County.

Students are learn how to alert the community if a disaster were to hit the area. The ‘Zombie' theme embodies the message: Don't be a zombie. Be aware and be active.

Two Holgate students, Landon Healy and Cole Snyder, join ‘Your Morning Saturday' to talk about the upcoming event.
