Don't Waste Your Money: Items you should never put in the dishwasher

(Toledo News Now) -

Summer is a time we serve lots of meals on plastic plates, with plastic cups and utensils. These days, many of these items are fun and colorful, not to mention convenient for outdoor grilling, but there are certain items you should never put in a dishwasher.

We love our dishwashers. Toss all your dirty plates and glasses in it, add detergent, and press the button. There is nothing simpler.

But it turns out many of us are putting things in the dishwasher we shouldn't be washing there.

Better To Wash By Hand

Consumer Reports magazine says the dishwasher is not a place for grandma's glassware, or anything else easily broken or damaged.

So with the help of Consumer Reports and dishwasher manufacturers, we have a list of items you should wash only by hand:

-Fine crystal, because it is easily damaged.

-Dishes with gold trim, because the gold can flake off.

-Soft plastic, because it can melt.

-Teflon pans, because they can lose their nonstick surface.

-Wooden spoons or cutting boards, because the wood will dry out and crack.

-Cast iron pans, because they will lose their oily surface.

Doesn't That Stink?

From the doesn't that stink file comes putting anything that can melt too close to the heating element.

Consumer reports says if there's any question about a plastic cup or plate, place it on the top rack, away from the heat. Better yet, turn off the drying feature for that load.

Bottom Line

If you're not sure if an item is dishwasher safe, don't wash it there. If you're worried about melting, be sure to set it for air dry only.

That way you save those plates and don't waste your money.
