Major construction projects to close parts of Sylvania Township - News, Weather, Sports, Toledo, OH

Sylvania Avenue to shut down for bridge repairs Monday

SYLVANIA TOWNSHIP, OH (Toledo News Now) -

Sylvania Township is gearing up for a construction project that will close a part of Sylvania Avenue just west of Corey Road for two weeks.

The busy portion will close for about two weeks, as long as the weather cooperates. Bridge repairs will begin Monday, and motorists will have to take an alternate route.

Two projects will be going on at once: Bridge repairs on Sylvania, including resurfacing, while Holland-Sylvania and Corey/Whiteford get repaved.

"During this shutdown, we're actually repaving that whole stretch of road. We combined the two projects to disrupt the public as little as possible," explained Brian Zienta, a Lucas County bridge engineer.

Although construction can mean a headache for drivers and area businesses, the Lucas County Engineer's Office says the 14-day closure will save $100,000.

Lisa's Manicure and Pedicure Spa sits at the corner of Holland-Sylvania and Sylvania. Employees say they will still be open for business.

"It might affect some of our customers, but hopefully, they'll just take an alternate route to get here," said Bree Gilson, with Lisa's Manicure and Pedicure Spa.

One local driver says she will just find a way to get around the mess.

"You just do what you have to do, you know? You just find alternate routes, and try to avoid the state flower - which is our orange barrels," said Lola Harder, an area resident.

Detours will direct motorists south at Talmadge Road and at Holland-Sylvania Road to Central Avenue in both directions.
