(WMC-TV) - Many North Mississippi residents spent Memorial Day in Twin Oaks Memorial Gardens in Southaven to observe the holiday.

Bagpipes with a gun salute and a raising of the flag showed a group of North Mississippi residents' gratitude to fallen service members.

"We are going to plant flags all over their graves to memorialize their sacrifice," said Brayden Lyons with Boy Scout Troup 349.

From the young to the old, residents stressed the importance of honoring those who have sacrificed for their country.

"To show respect and remember them for what they have done," said Nyjah Turner with Horn Lake High School ROTC.

Turner was one of the flag bearers representing her high school, Active in her high school ROTC, Turner looks forward to going into the military when she graduates.

"Memorial Day is a day of remembering the men and women who died while serving. Memorial Day is also marked by sacrifice debts that have been paid with bloodshed and human life," said Monday's keynote speaker Rickey Crane.

Crane gave the keynote address to the group, and mayor Greg Davis honored the fallen with a poem.

"Tomorrow is not promised to anyone young or old alike, and today may be the last chance you get to hold your loved one tight," said Davis.

Perhaps the most emotional part of the ceremony happened when organizers played a video featuring a long list of resident who are gone but not forgotten.

"They gave their lives for us so we should be able to spare one day for them," said Brayden.
