St. John’s rowing team heads to nationals

TOLEDO, OH (Toledo News Now) -

The St. John's Titans are looking to take home a national title this weekend in rowing.

"I have a great group of guys, and I think all of them are so invested in the St. John's experience…and the theme of the sport," said Philip Levering, rowing coach.

That theme is working together.

"We've improved and kept improving," said Senior Erik Brodin. "We've shown ourselves to be a formidable team."

At the Midwest Regional earlier this month, the team earned three medals, plus a trip to nationals this week. But their success didn't happen overnight. The school has had a crew team for 30 years, and prior to this month, only had five Midwest Regional victories to show for it.

"We come here every day, sometimes even in the morning at like 5 a.m.," said Senior Austin Mack. "It's tiring, but I'm here for my team, and as long as they're having fun, I'm having fun."

The team credits their success to the fact that they're so close. In fact, they don't call each other teammates, they're brothers.

Win or lose at nationals, they've already made a big splash.
