Union will help Diamond Crystal workers after plant closes

PERRYSBURG TOWNSHIP, OH (Toledo News Now) -

It's not going to be a good summer for workers at the Diamond Crystal Brands plant in Perrysburg Township. The plant is closing in July, and about 150 workers will be out of a job.

The factory produces Splenda sweetener, but the Splenda company pulled its contract with the plant when it expires in June.

"I don' think a plant closure is ever easy, whether you're prepared for it or not," said Brigid Kelly, communications director for the UFCW Local 75. "We are going to do everything we can over the next month in order to make sure the transition is as easy as we can for our members."

That will including helping workers find other jobs. Kelly says Diamond Crystal has a workforce with a strong work ethic, and there are plenty of plants in northwest Ohio.

But first, there's work to do with the company.

"Typically when a plant shuts down, the union and company engage in bargaining in order to work out the conditions of the plant closure, and what will happen from that point forward," she said.

Plant management did not return calls from Toledo News Now for comment.
