Local artist wants to paint 13,000 pictures for OK

TOLEDO, OH (Toledo News Now) -

A local woman is hitting the canvas for a good cause.

Klaire Russell is a speed painter. She can turn a plain canvas into art in about 45 seconds. She wants to do that 13,000 times – one for each house lost in Moore, OK to tornadoes.

Thursday morning, Russell saw on the news that a gallon of water is costing people in Moore about $40 right now.

"Something that we can all get up and go to our kitchens and get a glass of," she said.

So she got the idea.

"I figured I can do 13,000 paintings for a donation of one gallon of water per painting, and send Oklahoma 13,000 gallons of water."

Russell says she knows what it's like to lose everything. On the verge of homelessness in 2007 after losing her job, she picked up a paintbrush for the first time. She hasn't looked back since. Now she wants to use her gift to help others.

"I really want them to know that people care," she said. "I know it feels like the world has come to an end, I felt like my world did come to an end, but it's going to be okay."

Russell says she'll store the water in her house if she has to. Painting 13,000 works of art is no small task, but she says she's more than willing.

She is hoping, though, to get some help on canvas donations and a place to store the water. To donate, visit her website here, or email info@KlaireRussell.com.
