UT pushes to start selling alcohol at sporting events

TOLEDO, OH (Toledo News Now) -

Visitors could soon have the option of enjoying a cold beer next time they head to a University of Toledo sporting event.

They are still in the very early stages of the process, but officials say beer and wine could be sold at the university's Glass Bowl stadium this fall. The homeopener for the Rockets is Sept. 14.

"I think it goes along with the environment of athletics," said Paulette Bongratz, MBA student at UT.

It's a move some students say could increase attendance at games.

"I know a lot of our alumni, they hang out in the parking lot and don't even come into the games. So I think that's something that could be positive in the long run," said Bongratz.

Others believe with alcohol comes safety concerns.

"My first question is: How are they going to control the amount of alcohol that people consume?" asked Verl Luse, Ph.D. student at UT.

If approved, UT would join Bowling Green State University, University of Akron and Kent State University, who already sell alcohol at sporting events on campus.

"Other schools are doing it. So it probably will attract people to the games," said Luse.

Still, Bongratz feels most drinking will probably happen outside the stadium anyway.

"It isn't really going to cause any safety issues, not any more than tailgating already does," said Bongratz.

According to athletic director Mike O'Brien, there is a meeting in June to discuss details and obstacles.
