(WMC-TV) - When many Memphians think of the Bluff City they think of Elvis, barbecue, and now the Grizzlies – but many also think of Action News 5's Joe Birch. A young Joe Birch stepped into the Action News 5 newsroom 35 years ago this May to bring viewers all of the latest and breaking news.

One of Action News 5's lead anchors became a permanent part of the Action News Five family just a few years after being an eager newsroom intern.

It has been 35 years since Joe's first day on the job as of Monday.

His familiar face, and hair, coming into hundreds of Mid-South homes every night from the anchor desk and beyond.

Career accomplishments include carrying the Olympic Torch on its way to Atlanta, and sending well wishes from Memphis to the Pope – to list a couple.

Joe has not slowed down in the years since the station celebrated his 30th anniversary.

His experience, influence and compassion never waver.

He exposed abandoned schools that turned into sex dens. He was at the 2008 Presidential debate from Oxford, Mississippi.

Also, he celebrated President Barack Obama's commencement speech with the graduates of Booker T. Washington High School.

In an exclusive interview, New Albany football coach Ron Price walked Joe through the horror of his wife's murder.

He grieved with the family of Micah Pate after their daughter's marriage ended in bloodshed.

In 2012, Joe was granted exclusive access into the world of a man who went from a rock star to modern-day monk.

Joe is a hero to the children at St. Jude Children's Research Hospital.

Another thing to add to the list, is that Joe has shaken hands with an Elvis impersonator, and modeled for the clothier to the King.

He has been the emcee for countless events and crossed the finish line for an endless list of charities.

Joe got actor Michael Douglas to open up about his personal life.

Many viewers were there for Joe when he experienced his own personal tragedy. Last year, Joe broke his neck after a traffic accident.

"I'm really overwhelmed with the outpouring [support]. I've been hearing about the people who have expressed concern about me," said Joe during his hospitalization.

Although, that barely slowed him down. He was back on the job in less than two weeks.

Recently, in April, Joe traveled to Washington D.C. for a star studded night at the White House celebrating Memphis soul music.

The real stars in Joe's life have always been his family.

The Action News 5 newsroom has seen Joe's two boys go from diapers and play dates to graduation caps and weddings.

For Joe Birch Action News Five is not just a job, but it is a way of life. It is where he has dedicated most of his life.

Celebrating the triumphs and guiding viewers through the tragedies, Joe is always working to make the Mid-South a better place.
