TOLEDO, OH (Toledo News Now) -

Toledo Police are searching for someone they say is responsible for a rash of credit card fraud in the area.

Many people pay for everything with a card, but if you aren't careful, you can get more than you paid for.

Police say it occurs a lot at restaurants or drive-thrus. Dealers recruit people working there to carry card readers. When customers give them their card to pay, the employee swipes it through their card reader – stealing your information - before swiping it through the terminal for the purchase.

"Watch them actually swipe it through their register," said Sgt. Joe Heffernan, of Toledo Police. "That way you know that that credit card is only being used for that purpose. And that that data is not being captured onto another device."

Once your information is stolen, police say the dealers are taking your information and transferring it to gift cards to make big purchases with your money.

If you think your information has been stolen, report it to the credit card company and to police.
