Family of 5 loses home after shed catches fire

Weston, OH (Toledo News Now) -

One family is homeless, after a fire destroyed two mobile homes early Monday morning. The blaze sparked in the Lawndale Mobile Home Plaza, southwest of Bowling Green.

Emergency responders say they do not know what started the fire, but they do know it started in a shed and spread to two mobile homes. A sheriff's deputy spotted the fire while on patrol in the area, according to authorities.

Family members say the only reason they're even alive is because of a 14-year-old. He was sleeping right behind the window when the fire started.

"I was sleeping. I heard the snap, crackle, and pop, that's what woke me up. And I looked out the window to see what it was. I seen orange. So I looked out closely and that's when I seen the fire," said Brodi Barnes.

"My nephew came into the bedroom and said, 'Aunt 'Nee, you'd better call 911!' and that's when we seen that the shed was on fire next door," said Renee Stinehart.

They say they could feel the heat off the shed from their living room. They knew they had to get out. Five family members, along with their pets, were able to get out safely. The second mobile home nearby was vacant.

Firefighters were able to put out the flames, but the mobile homes were destroyed.

The Red Cross has stepped in to assist the family who escaped the fire. They are currently staying with a relative.

The cause of the fire is still under investigation. Weston Fire Chief Randy Tolles says following a meeting with State Fire Marshall investigators, the fire is ruled as an arson. Tolles asks anyone with information about the fire to contact the Wood County Sheriff's Department or State Fire Marshall's office.

Donations are being accepted for the family affected by the fire.

You can drop off donations at Croghan Colonial Bank, 22973 Defiance Pike Custar, OH 43511.

BYLINE: Victoria Idoni EAST TOLEDO, OH (WTOL) - This is an all too familiar scene on the roads: people getting distracted behind the wheel. April is National Distracted Driving Awareness Month. One month out of the year is certainly not enough to observe safer driving habits. This is something we should always keep in mind. The good news is, there are ways in which our changing culture is evolving to deal with technology and how it can both hel...
