American Cancer Society turns 100

LUCAS COUNTY, OH (Toledo News Now) -

The American Cancer Society is celebrating a huge anniversary. They will turn 100 next week, and they kicked off festivities this week.

Every year, the American Cancer Society has a fundraiser, the Cattle Baron's Ball, where they honor a cancer survivor. But this year, they'll be doing things a little differently by honoring the faces of cancer in northwest Ohio.

"What we're trying to do is really honor those people, and the faces of cancer aren't just people with cancer – it's caregivers, it's physicians, it's researchers, it's supporters of those people with cancer," explained Mike Flis, chairman of the American Cancer Society. "It can be really anyone that's come in contact with cancer."

They kicked off the celebration with a wine and cheese event, and hope to spread the message to the community to nominate their loved ones.

"It's a really unique and humbling experience, to be honored for an organization that is trying its darnedest to not only conquer this, but to not have it exist in the future," said Robert Thompson, who was nominated as a face of cancer.

It costs $100 to nominate someone. The honoree would then receive a ticket to the Cattle Baron's Ball, and their picture will be on a wall of nominees at the ball. There is no limit to the faces of cancer.
