Click it or Ticket campaign begins – buckle up!

LUCAS COUNTY, OH (Toledo News Now) -

The 2013 Click it or Ticket national campaign is underway. Local law enforcement is stressing the importance of wearing a seatbelt.

The kickoff began Friday at the Maumee Fire Department. Several local agencies from across Lucas County were there to support the campaign.

"If we can get one more person to wear a seat belt out there, then it's worth what we're doing," said Det. Mark Woodruff, of the Lucas County Task Force.

The kickoff also honored crash survivors that were wearing their seatbelts at the time of their accident. One person honored says wearing her seatbelt saved her life.

"Even if it's one person that see this and they say, ‘You know what, I'm going to wear my seatbelt, because the next minute, I could be in an accident and die,'" said Corine Fonseca.

The Lucas County Data Committee compiled some shocking stats of traffic accidents from over the last five years. They found that every 10 days, someone in Lucas County is killed as a result of a traffic crash.

"What we've found is that you are 53 percent more likely to die in a crash if you're not wearing a seatbelt," said Deanna Montanaro, injury prevention coordinator. "We also found that you're twice as likely to be injured if you're not wearing your seatbelt."

Officers in Lucas County will have a stronger presence during the next few weeks to encourage drivers to "click it or ticket."
