'Safety bullet' designed to prevent accidental gun deaths

As the gun debate continues nationwide, there is a new tool being used to prevent accidental gun-related deaths, especially among children.

Licensed gun owners have been looking for ways to keep guns out of the hands of their children, but also have them readily accessible in case of an emergency.

Now a Holyoke man is selling a product that he says makes that possible.

Charlie Russell has been a gun owner for only about five years now and does it for the sport of it.

But as a father, he says it's hard to see the stories of kids getting their hands on guns, sometimes with deadly consequences.

"A child walks in, grabs the gun, and a young child the first thing they're going to do is pull the trigger," Russell said.

It happened just this month in Kentucky. A 5-year-old who had been given a rifle for his birthday was left alone for a matter of seconds, in that time he fatally turned the gun on his 2-year-old sister.

Russell says he's got a tool to keep tragedies like that from happening.

He brought CBS 3 to the Holyoke Gun Range to show us the Safety Bullet, a tool created in Florida to keep gun owners and their kids safer.

"We're only human and we all make mistakes. It's just another added layer of safety for gun owners," he said.

Russell demonstrated by loading two Safety Bullets into the magazine. Once the hammer inside the gun hit the safety bullet, it's temporarily useless after the Safety Bullet expands, keeping the cylinder from revolving.

Russell says there is no one answer to accidental gun deaths, but the Safety Bullet is a start.

"It's not the solution but it certainly helps, the way technology's going these days I'm sure they're going to be coming up with more ways to safeguard a gun."

At $25 a pack, Russell says it's a small investment with a big payoff.

"If it saves one life, it's worth it as far as I'm concerned."
