TOLEDO, OH (Toledo News Now) - Two days after the Bell Administration submitted the city's annual 1-year action plan for federal neighborhoods funding, Toledo City Council voted to approve some funding allocation changes, to direct an additional $150,000 in Community Development Block Grant funding for local homeless shelters.
"What this does is give those shelters a little more certainty about what their funding picture will be, so they can provide the services they provide," said Council President Paula Hicks-Hudson.
Family House was facing a $64,000 funding cut, which would have forced the shelter to end its toddler program.
"We work with kids 18 months to 3 years of age, to help them develop," said Executive Director Renee Palacios. "This will help us keep that program going."
The move restores roughly $30,000 in funding for the Aurora Project, which will help the shelter for women ease its concerns about cutting services.
"When you work with women who are facing many different problems, you can't just give them an apartment and expect them to cope and to manage," said Aurora Project Executive Director Denise Fox.
Hicks-Hudson says despite recent tensions between council members and the mayor's office, she's hoping city leaders can focus on the goal of helping people who are in a crisis situation.
