Coast Guard searching for 2 overdue boaters, seeking public assistance

TOLEDO, OH (Press Release) -

The Coast Guard is currently searching the area of western Lake Erie in the vicinity of Monroe, MI, for two boaters reported overdue early Thursday morning.

Missing are: Godfried McKinney, 54, of Southfield, MI, and Kendrick Covington, 64, of Detroit.

At about 4:45 a.m., a watchstander at Coast Guard Station Toledo was notified of missing persons by the Monroe County dispatch via telephone. The Monroe County dispatch was contacted by McKinney's wife who reported her husband and Covington overdue from a fishing trip, stating she hadn't seen him since about 9 a.m. A SAR controller contacted Covington's wife, who had not seen him since about 7:30 a.m. Wednesday and expected him to be home at 9:30 or 10 p.m.

Multiple agencies are currently searching for the two, including an aircrew aboard an MH-65C Dolphin rescue helicopter from Coast Guard Air Station Detroit, on Selfridge Air National Guard Base in Mt. Clemens, MI; a boat crew aboard a 45-foot Response Boat-Medium from Station Toledo; and another crew from the station searching from land. Customs and Border Protection will be assisting with a search plane out of Selfridge Air National Guard Base, but it has not arrived on scene yet.

The two men launched from the Front Street launch ramp in Monroe. The Monroe County dispatch confirmed that McKinney's truck and boat trailer were still in the parking lot. The two men were fishing aboard a 14-foot beige and white jon boat and normally fish in the vicinity of Luna Pier and the power plant.

If anyone has seen McKinney and Covington in the last 24 hours or has any more information as to their whereabouts, contact Coast Guard Sector Detroit at 313-568-9559 or Coast Guard Station Toledo at 419-729-2034.
