Council approves $63K to remove columns at Roosevelt Pool

TOLEDO, OH (Toledo News Now) -

A pool that reopened in the Glass City last year reopened with what some consider major eyesores, but conditions may change as it was just earmarked to receive money for improvements.

On Tuesday, Toledo City Council voted 8-4 in favor of spending $63,000 from the Parkland Replacement Fund, to tear down more than a dozen brick columns at Roosevelt Pool. The columns previously supported the former pool roof, but Councilman Tyrone Riley says they are an eyesore and a threat to kids' safety.

"The pillars serve no purpose. The roof has been taken down. Therefore, the columns should be taken down, and it should have happened a long time ago," said Riley.

The mayor's office says the administration has no intention of tearing down the columns even though Council has approved the spending measure.

In 2012, the city spent $277,000 in Capital Improvement Funds to renovate the pool and reopen it to the public.
