Fallen officers honored in special ceremony

TOLEDO, OH (Toledo News Now) -

On Wednesday the Toledo Police Department honored fallen officers in a special ceremony.

The annual ceremony took place in City Council chambers with a memorial service following in the Memorial Garden located at the Civic Center Mall. The ceremony paid tribute and respect to lives lost through prayer, a 21-gun salute and other rituals.

The last officer to die in the line of duty was Det. Keith Dressel in February 2007. Dressel and other officers from northwest Ohio and southeastern Michigan were honored at Wednesday's event.

"For us to bring the community together with us, and remember, because that's important. It's very important to remember, that these officers sacrificed their lives, not just for the police department, but for the whole community," said Sgt. Joe Heffernan with the TPD.

A variety of awards were also given to officers and outstanding citizens who helped the police department in numerous incidents throughout the year.

The TPD is one of several departments across the country to hold memorials Wednesday, as part of National Police Week.
