Local woman runs first marathon for a cause

TOLEDO, OH (Toledo News Now) -

Cecilia Castellano is 45, has a full time job, is a wife and mother of three, and she's running her first marathon to raise money for a local non-profit organization.

She's hoping to raise $200 for every mile she runs at the Cleveland Marathon this weekend, and will donate it all to Family Promise of Greater Toledo.

"I was not a runner at all," Castellano said. "I had no idea how to run, but I sort of took the challenge."

Castellano says she started running two years ago, after her friends asked her to run a 5K. Since then, she's run two half-marathons.

"One of the things I do when I run is I pray," she said. "And the kind of message that I got was that you need to make this about something other than yourself."

So she decided she would raise money for Family Promise, which works in partnership with various faith-based communities to provide shelter for homeless families.

"When people ask me, ‘Why are you running a marathon, are you crazy?' Well, I'm a little crazy," Castellano said. "But then I can talk to them a little bit about the homelessness in northwest Ohio and how people can make a difference, and how Family Promise makes a difference."

Elizabeth Tore, the executive director of Family Promise, says Castellano shows the power of one.

"One person can do so much," Tore said. "One person can focus attention, can raise money, can run a marathon, can think about other people, can help us think, ‘What can I do?'"

After double overtime, the Toledo Walleye came out on top and beat the Indy 3-2 Thursday night for a sweep in the series. Even though the fish had a 3-0 lead in the first round playoff series, the toughest thing to do in hockey is to beat a desperate team on their home ice.  Halfway through a second overtime Kyle Bonis sets up Christian Hillbrich to score the game winning goal.  The Walleye now advances to the second round.
