Henry Township considering $42M expansion project at CSX

HENRY TOWNSHIP, OH (Toledo News Now) -

Henry Township trustees may be planning a multimillion-dollar expansion at the CSX facility, just 2 miles from the village of North Baltimore.

Trustees are considering a $42 million expansion project within the CSX facility's gates. According to Wade Gottschalk, Wood County Economic Development director, the funds would not go toward the purchase of any new land. Instead, CSX will develop the area it already owns, by obtaining two new cranes and eight new tracks, as well as extending the processing area by 2,300 feet to the west.

Gottschalk says Henry Township trustees may be applying for a U.S. Department of Transportation TIGER Grant to make changes inside the intermodal gates to make the year-old project more efficient. The grant would pay for $21 million and CSX would cover the rest.

It is unknown at this time if the project will create new jobs at the intermodal terminal. However, there will be construction jobs associated with the project.

Gottschalk says the Township has not yet applied for the grant, but he estimates they would learn if the grant money would be awarded later this year. Construction may begin next year.

The Northwest Ohio Intermodal Terminal's location in Henry Township is ideal for rail and highway connectivity, and provides a critical link along the National Gateway to enhance intermodal freight transportation. The terminal opened in 2011 following a private investment of $175 million by CSX and other partners.
