BAY VILLAGE, OH (WOIO) -

Police in Bay Village involved in a high-speed chase with a drunk designated driver.

An officer tried to stop a vehicle on Wolf Road near Sutcliffe for a traffic violation Saturday around midnight. The vehicle fled, and the officer pursued briefly before calling off the pursuit because of the high speeds and wet roads.

A short time later, the officer located the vehicle in a front yard on Wolf Road near the High School, at which time the vehicle fled again. The officer pursued the vehicle again. The fleeing vehicle crashed into two poles at the intersection of Wolf Road and Walmar.

The intoxicated male driver, identified as 26-year-old Michael T. Devries, was knocked unconscious from the crash. He later claimed to be the designated driver for the evening.

Devries was transported to the hospital with non-life threatening injures. He was charged with reckless operation, fleeing and OVI.
