Oregon PD finally gets their K-9

OREGON, OH (Toledo News Now) -

Oregon Police are just days away from making department history when they welcome their first four-legged officer to the team.

They've been working for months to make it happen. For the past several weeks, Grim has been making his home in Pennsylvania, at Shallow Creek Kennels. He's been learning everything he'll need to be ready to hit the streets in Oregon.

"He's a fun dog to be around," said Sgt. Jeff Martin. "He's a happy-go-lucky kind of dog, but he means business when we come down to doing work."

Martin has been on the force 13 years. His new partner is Grim, a 19-month-old German Malinois. Grim will help lead the department in a new direction.

"This will help us track down missing children, fleeing suspects, and hopefully find a lot of illegal drugs," said Chief Mike Navarre.

The department has wanted to add a K-9 to the ranks for years. After a proposal from Chief Navarre, testimony from officers, and a $15,000 donation from Toledo Refinery, Oregon city council agreed.

It's been a long road for Grim, who was imported from Europe, but he will soon be out in Oregon, doing what he has spent weeks training to do, and helping keep the community safe.
