Local trails closed for repairs

TOLEDO, OH (Toledo News Now) -

Parts of the Wabash Cannonball and University Parks trails will be closed in sections for repairs.

The purpose of the project is to keep the facilities in good repair and to preserve the system. Lucas County Chief Deputy Engineer Jeff Lohse says they tried to establish the plan to be as least disruptive to those who use the trails as possible.

Work on part of the Wabash Cannonball North Fork began today at the west and, and will move east. Work includes tree trimming and guardrail replacement, as well as crack repair and sealing.

"Depending on the years, the North Fork was built around 2000-2001, and the South Fork was built in 2002 and 2005," said Lohse. "They were all phased-type construction, so there's various repairs being done depending on where you are on the trail."

The North Fork should be completed by the Fourth of July. In the meantime, a similar project will soon be underway on the University Parks Trail, beginning in June.

"There's different stages of construction activity taking place, depending on the age," Lohse said. "But it's basically routine pavement repairs or maintenance to preserve it."

A federal transportation enhancement grant will fund 80 percent of the $1.2 million project. The remaining balance is provided by Metroparks and partners who own the trails.
