Wrong-way driver causes crash on I-75

WOOD COUNTY, OH (Toledo News Now) -

Two people were rushed to the hospital early Sunday morning after a wrong-way crash on I-75.

According to the Highway Patrol, around 1.a.m. a man drove his pickup truck southbound in the northbound lanes of I-75, just south of Route 6 in Portage Township.

Lt. Jerrod Savidge tells WTOL, the driver likely got onto the highway at Wooster Street or Route 6.

Troopers say 29-year-old Les Lundquest, of Bowling Green, was behind the wheel of the pickup truck.

Lundquest crashed head-on with a semi truck, driven by James Mechem of Columbus.

The crash happened almost immediately, according to troopers.

Life Flight airlifted Lundquest to Mercy Saint Vincent Medical Center. He was in critical condition, but has been updated to fair.

Mechem was taken to the Wood County Hospital. He was treated for non-life-threatening injuries and released.

Investigators say alcohol and drugs may have been a factor in the crash.

An investigation is underway.

The northbound lanes of I-75 shutdown for almost an hour and a half while crews cleared the wreckage, but the road has since reopened to traffic.
