Teens looking to get to work this summer

TOLEDO, OH (Toledo News Now) -

Summer is almost here and the job search is on for teenagers.

Saturday, Toledo's annual Youth Job Fair was held at the Seagate Center.

Thousands came to meet with dozens of employers to land that right position.

The fair was for teens between the ages of 16-21.

There was a wide range of potential employers, from fast food restaurants to neighborhood carry-outs.

The demand for jobs is there.

"I came with 300 applications and I think I have twenty left. Looking forward to an influx of people" said Mary Burtain of Stop and Shop Carry-Out.

This is all about one-stop shopping for a job.

The teens met with potential employers, learned about summer job opportunities and applied for openings.

"We use people that have customer skills. If you just talked on the phone, you can do this job," said Ms. Burtain.

Organizers hope the job picture for teens is better now than in the past.

"We had a great committee working together trying to rally to get out there and get the community to come. Chamber of Commerce has worked with us diligently to help us get the word out to the businesses," according to Rosalinda Contreraz-Carter of the Toledo Youth Commission.

The teens realize they face stiff competition for a job.

"I'm not the only person out here applying for a job. Plenty of other people are around too," said Enrico Suarez.

"Because you apply everywhere, people are not necessarily hiring at that time," added James Patterson.

As the job search continues, fair organizers remind teens as they go out on interviews, dress to impress, make sure your resume lists volunteer experience and most of all, put your best foot forward.
